Renewables Ltd is a company recently formed to develop a biodiesel production plant on a site at Ridham Dock on the North Kent coast. The plant is to be supplied by Italian plant designers Desmet Ballestra Oleo ("DSB").

Biodiesel is a renewable alternative to mineral diesel fuel. It is derived from a range of vegetable oils and fats continually produced in the growing cycle and it can therefore contribute to addressing the problem of climate change since the carbon dioxide produced from the combustion process will be substantially offset by carbon dioxide consumed in the growing cycle.

Furthermore, in contrast to mineral diesel, biodiesel is non-toxic, biodegradable and generally perceived as “cleaner” in producing less tailpipe emissions - particulates, sulphur compounds and hydrocarbons.

Current EU directives mandate staged targets for percentages of road fuel products that must consist of biofuel, rising to 5.75% by 2010.

DSB’s technology is economical in its consumption of raw materials and energy and mitigates waste. Renewables will base their strategy on achieving production and procurement economies of scale whilst securing sufficient volumes of low cost feedstock.
